Richard Fleischhut

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard Fleischhut (born December 18, 1881 in Köslin (Pomerania), † June 14, 1951 in Steina now Willingshausen ) was a German photographer.

He became known for his portraits of celebrities ( Marlene Dietrich , Luis Trenker , Max Schmeling , Cary Grant , Frank Lloyd Wright , Franklin Delano Roosevelt , Richard Tauber , and many others) made as a photographer on the transatlantic ships Bremen and Columbus , and for his spectacular photos of the explosion of the Hindenburg airship in Lakehurst on May 6, 1937.

During the Second World War Fleischhut was interned temporarily in the USA after the Columbus on which he was located had to be abandoned by the crew in 1939 shortly after the start of the war in the Atlantic and was sunk.

Fleischhut was soon forgotten after his death in 1951, although many of his photos (e.g. the portraits of celebrities and the Hindenburg photographs) were often printed in publications without naming the author of the photos. Fleischhut's work was made accessible again to the general public through an exhibition in the Stadtmuseum Kiel in 2005, which has since been shown at various locations in Germany (Emden, Berlin, Heidelberg, Greifswald).
