Richard Freund (born November 25, 1891 in Vienna ; † January 28, 1974 there ) was an Austrian politician .

Life

Richard Freund attended elementary and community school and then completed an apprenticeship as a silk dyer . As a worker, he traditionally joined the trade union and the SPÖ at a young age . In 1912 he found work at the Austrian State Railways , where he was employed as an unskilled worker, initially working as a car cleaner and later being responsible for moving the railcars. Although the unions were banned in February 1934, Freund continued to be actively involved in their interests until 1938. Freund was arrested several times, but was released just as often after a short time.

He opposed National Socialism at an early age and came out against the "Anschluss" of Austria to the German Empire . He had ties to a group of socialists operating in Salzburg and how he resisted. When this group was arrested by the Gestapo in the spring of 1943 , Freund was also arrested on May 17, 1943, and in a trial held at the People's Court in Berlin on February 9, 1944 , for failure to report a treasonous plan to imprisonment sentenced to three years. In 1945 he was sent on a death march to Stein Prison to be executed there; the Allied invasion saved his life.

Richard Freund went into politics after World War II . As early as December 1945 he became a member of the Federal Council as a member of the Federal Council as a member of the Margareten district of Vienna , an office he held until March 1953. During this time, from July to December 1950, as President of the Federal Council, he headed that high state body. In March 1953 he was elected as a member of the National Council and was able to hold his seat until June 1959.

Richard Freund died in January 1974 at the age of 82 in Vienna.
