Richard Gunn

Richard Kenneth Gunn (born February 16, 1871 in London , † June 23, 1961 ) was a British boxer .

He started boxing at the Surrey Commercial Docks Boxing Club in 1893 after being employed by his father in his tailor's shop in the East End of London . Gunn was British amateur featherweight champion three times in a row between 1894 and 1896. He was so superior to his competitors that the Amateur Boxing Association had to ask him to withdraw from top-class sport. Gunn complied with this request and served on the association's board for more than ten years.

The 1908 Olympic Games attracted him so much that he dared to make a comeback. He won the gold medal at the age of 37 years and 254 days, making him the oldest Olympic boxing champion of all time. After this final victory, Gunn resigned for good. In the course of his boxing career, he lost only one fight.
