Career

Ján Zachara started boxing as a teenager in Trenčín . Immediately after the end of the war, he advanced to the top class of Czechoslovak boxers. In 1946 he started for the first time in the Czechoslovak national flyweight team, which contested a four-country battle with Poland , Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union in Prague . Ján Zachara won against the Polish and Yugoslav starters and boxed against the Soviet athlete Lev Segalowitsch in a draw. In 1947 he still fought a few countries for Czechoslovakia. In 1947 and 1948 he was Czechoslovakian champion in bantam and featherweight.

Ján Zachara did not take part in the 1948 Olympic Games in London . Whether he competed at the European Championships in 1947 in Dublin , 1949 in Oslo , 1951 in Milan and 1953 in Warsaw , and if so, how he did then, cannot be determined due to the current lack of sources. But he did not win any medals at these championships.

The greatest success in the career of Ján Zachara was the Olympic victory at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 . In featherweight he defeated Åke Wärnström from Sweden and Su Bung-Nan from South Korea each with 3-0 judges' votes on points. He won against János Erdei from Hungary , Leonard Leisching from South Africa and in the fight for the gold medal against Sergio Caprari from Italy with 2-1 judges' votes.

In 1955 Ján Zachara started at the European Championships in Berlin (West). In featherweight he met Thomas Nicholls from England in the round of 16 and lost this fight on points. He was also there again at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 . He won there in the featherweight round of 16 against Dong Hun-Chung from South Korea on points, but lost in the quarterfinals against the 1952 bantamweight Olympic champion Pentti Hämäläinen from Finland on points and was eliminated.

Ján Zachara ended his boxing career in 1958. In that year he received the title "Honored Master of Sport" in Czechoslovakia and in 1972 he was awarded the title "Honored Trainer".
