Hans-Peter Mehling (born March 12, 1934 in Trier ; † October 13, 2019 in Thönse ) was a former German boxer . He won a bronze medal in featherweight at the European Amateur Championships in 1953 and 1955 .

Career

Hans-Peter Mehling grew up in Celle and started boxing in 1946 as a teenager at the Verein für Körperkultur (VfK) Celle . He quickly developed into a top German boxer. In 1948 he was German youth champion (age group up to 16 years) and in 1950 and 1951 German junior champion (age group up to 18 years) in the class up to 51 kg and 54 kg body weight, respectively.

In 1953 he was the first Lower Saxony featherweight champion and took third place in the German championship in the same weight class behind Alfred Schweer from Bochum and Manfred Bieber from Oldenburg . Quite surprisingly, it was then used by DABV at the European Championships in Warsaw . He justified this trust, because he won in the quarterfinals over the Czech Stehlik and had already won a bronze medal . In the semifinals he fought against Jozef Kruza from Poland , who had the support of 5,000 fanatical Polish spectators, and lost just on points. Kruza then also became European champion.

In 1954 Hans-Peter Mehling won his first German championship title. He won u. a. in the semifinals over Johann Kolz from Frechen and clearly beat Conny Rudhof from Rüsselsheim on points in the final . There were no international championships this year.

In 1955 Hans-Peter Mehling was again German featherweight champion. He defeated old master Egon Schidan from Düsseldorf in the semifinals and again Conny Rudhof on points in the final. At the European Championships in Berlin he won in the round of 16 over the Egyptian Shakweer by knockout in the third round, defeated the Austrian Zima clearly on points in the quarterfinals and was defeated in the semifinals by the Soviet athlete Alexander Fedosejewitsch Sassuchin on points. This had won a bronze medal again.

In 1956 Hans-Peter Mehling won his third German featherweight championship. He suggested u. a. Günter Johannpeter from Hamm , one of eight boxing brothers and in the final he won over Hermann Lagarden from Goch safely on points. In the Olympic elimination for the all-German Olympic team, Hans-Peter Mehling lost to Karl-Heinz Schulz from ASK “Vorwärts” Berlin and thus missed participation in the Olympic Games in Melbourne .

In 1957 he won the qualification of the German boxers for the European championship in Prague over Bauer from Stuttgart and Hermann Lagarden. But he was unlucky in Prague: after winning points over Dubowski from Hungary , he fought against Mario Sitri from Italy in the next round . In the second round, both boxers collided with their heads, with Hans-Peter Mehling suffering a gaping eyebrow injury and unable to continue boxing. The German team management demanded the disqualification of Sitri because of headbuttings , but the jury decided on the demolition winner Sitri because of injury to Mehling.

After this championship, Hans-Peter Mehling resigned from boxing, although he was only 23 years old. He wanted to devote himself to his professional training. He stayed in boxing as long-time chairman of the VfK Celle .

In total, he played 228 fights, of which he won 184 and lost 18. 26 matches ended in a draw.

Hans-Peter Mehling died on October 13, 2019 after a long, serious illness.
