Richard Kapp (born June 25, 1976 in Vienna ) is an Austrian musician , singer and composer .

Life

Richard Kapp grew up in Vienna. In 2002 he received his diploma as multimedia producer at the SAE Institute Vienna . As a singer / songwriter and pianist he positions himself with his chamber-pop ensemble “The Gowns” in the indie sector. Kapp is mostly self-taught and started composing on the piano at the age of 6. He has no command of notes, but has developed his own notation system with which he can write down the arrangements for his small ensemble, which consists of piano, bass, drums, strings, a wind instrument and variable instruments such as glockenspiel or melodica. His trademark are surprising twists and turns in his compositions and an unprejudiced approach to musical styles, but also his sarcastic lyrics, with which he draws attention to the most varied of facets of everyday life.

Kapp's music is internationally oriented and therefore sometimes better known abroad than in his home country Austria. Two of his songs were airplayed on BBC 6music . For a song on his album “Lunchbox”, which has been distributed by HOANZL since 2010 , Richard Kapp was able to hire the American bassist Tony Cimorosi, who u. a. Recorded several albums with Randy Brecker , win and he sang a duet with the Scottish singer Woodstock Taylor, who already worked with Pete Brown and Stuart Epps. As a result of the album release, a music video for the song “Cocoon Man” was created (director: Christian Zwittnig) and broadcast on the Austrian music television station Gotv . In 2010 the Irish online music magazine RedTrackMusic voted Kapp “Artist Of The Year”. In 2015 his album “Fake!” Was presented in the program “Spielraum” on Ö1 and voted “Record Of The Year” by the Scottish radio station Radio Six International. Kapp toured several times with his band in Great Britain ( London and Brighton ) and Germany . In Vienna he played concerts with international acts such as Bitter Ruin (UK), David Kitt (IRL), BirdEatsBaby (UK) and Matt Keating (US).

Kapp's stylistic feature is the mix of different musical styles, where he sometimes combines pop music , jazz , chanson and classical music . Humor is also an important element for Kapp. In 2010 he created a fictional character called "Ricardo Fantastico" with which he satirized the artificial hype and the calculating marketing of pop stars on the Internet. An album was released under the name of the fictional character, which contains Kapp's most unconventional compositions to date.
