Richard Carl Johan Kappelin (born September 30, 1983 in Västerås ) is a former Swedish handball player .
The 1.91 m tall and right-handed man was used as a handball goalkeeper . With the Swedish junior selection, Richard Kappelin became U-21 world champion in 2003.
Kappelin made his debut at IK Sävehof in the Swedish Elitserien in 2002 and became champions in 2004. He reached the semifinals in the EHF Challenge Cup 2002/03 and the 3rd round in the EHF Cup 2003/04. He then played until 2010, in the 2006/07 season he briefly returned to Sävehof, at league rivals Alingsås HK , with whom he won his second championship in 2009. In the 2008 and 2009 seasons, Kappelin was voted the best goalkeeper in the Elitserien. In 2010 he went to the Spanish league ASOBAL , first to BM Ciudad Encantada , in 2012 to BM Aragón . After the club's financial problems, the second best keeper of the past season gave a short guest appearance at the Qatari club Al Gharafa from February 2013. Since Kappelin has not yet played an international match for Sweden due to the strong competitive situation , there has been speculation that he could accept Qatari citizenship and play for the host at the 2015 World Cup in Qatar. From the summer of 2013 he ran for the Danish club Aalborg Håndbold , with whom he reached the round of 16 in the EHF Champions League 2013/14. In the 2014/15 season he ran for Sélestat AHB in the French Ligue Nationale de Handball . After Sélestat was relegated in 2015, Kappelin joined the Spanish first division club Naturhouse La Rioja . From summer 2017 he was under contract with the Swedish club IFK Kristianstad . With Kristianstad he won the Swedish championship in 2018. He ended his career after the 2019/20 season.
Kappelin is married and has one son.
