Richard Kidder
Richard Kidder (baptized February 8, 1633 in East Grinstead , Sussex , † November 26, 1703 in Wells ) was a British theologian of the Church of England and Bishop of Bath and Wells .
Life
Kidder was the eighth of nine children of a saddler and studied from 1649 as a scholarship holder (Sizar) at Emmanuel College of the University of Cambridge with a bachelor's degree in 1652/53 and the Magister Artium in 1656. In 1655 he was a fellow of his college. 1659 until his dismissal for deviation from the prescribed doctrine in 1662 he was pastor (rector) of Stanground in Huntingdonshire and, after he had taken the oath of conformity, from 1664 to 1674 of Reyn Parva in Essex . In 1674 he became Preacher at the Rolls and he was Rector of St. Martin Outwich in London from 1674 to 1691 (awarded by the Merchants' Guild, Merchant Taylor's Company). He also had a benefice in Norwich from 1681 to 1691 and from 1689 to 1691 he was Dean of Peterborough Cathedral and during the same period royal chaplain to Queen Mary and William of Orange . From 1691 until his death he was Bishop of Bath and Wells. He died in the Bishops' Palace in Wells, Somerset, in the Great Storm of November 1703 when the chimney fell on his bed.
He is known as the author of theological writings, in particular A Demonstration of the Messias , which influenced the librettist of Handel's Messiah Charles Jennens and in which he also took up Joseph Mede's critical biblical interpretation that the book Zechariah had several authors. In 1694 his commentary on the five books of Moses appeared .
In 1690 he became DD (Doctor Divinitatis).
