Richard L. Lauchert (born February 4, 1823 in Sigmaringen , † December 27, 1868 in Berlin ) was a German painter .

Life

Lauchert, son of Hofkammerrat Joseph Lauchert and his wife Maria Waldburga, née Guttenberg, attended, like his six brothers, the Hedinger Progymnasium and then the Grand Ducal Badische Lyzeum in Konstanz . He was promoted early on by Karl Anton von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen . From 1839 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Peter von Cornelius and attended the painting school of Joseph Bernhardt there . His focus was on nude and portrait painting. In 1845 he went to Paris and worked for a time with Franz Xaver Winterhalter . In 1858 he settled in Berlin as a freelance painter, where he was known as a “painter for the highest circles in society”. He worked as a court painter at the Berlin court and portrayed, among others, Lieutenant Colonel Freiherr von Moltke .

On April 30, 1857, in Herbsleben near Gotha , he married Princess Amalie Adelheid von Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst (1821–1902), against the wishes of her family. She took her husband's name after the marriage. Prince Franz Joseph zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst and his wife Princess Caroline Friederike zu Hohenlohe-Lauenburg were Lauchert's in-laws. The couple had five children, but only three of them reached adulthood.

Lauchert became a Hohenzollern court painter and enjoyed extraordinary popularity among the aristocracy as a portrait painter . For most of the courts in Germany, Russia and England he created pictures (mostly portraits) that show an elegant, sometimes slightly sweet conception as well as a masterful treatment of flesh and textiles.

Lauchert died on December 27, 1868 in Berlin.
