Richard Riess (* 6. December 1937 in Sennfeld ) is an emeritus professor of practical theology . From 1979 to 2003 he was a professor at the Augustana University in Neuendettelsau . Richard Riess is one of the first to introduce practice-oriented, empirical, personal pastoral training for pastors of the Evangelical Church in Germany ( clinical pastoral training ).

Life

Richard Riess grew up as the son of a carpenter in Sennfeld. The father was killed in France on June 10, 1940 . Afterwards, the son lived with his grandparents on the farm "to the rhythm of nature and the church year". After graduating from high school in 1957, Riess studied Protestant theology and diaconal sciences in Erlangen , Heidelberg and Neuendettelsau and passed his first theological exam in 1963. After he took in Chicago and Boston in 1963/64 with a grant from the World Council of Churches in a clinical pastoral workout part. From 1964 to 1966 he was vicar in Munich- Nymphenburg and was ordained a pastor after his second theological exam. From 1966 to 1972 he was a research assistant at the University of Erlangen with Kurt Frör and worked with Dietrich Stollberg . The attempt by Riess and Stollberg to make the findings of pastoral psychology at the university fruitful was met with rejection: "What is the psychological" mess "about our honorable faculty?" A trip to the church leadership of the Bavarian regional church in Munich also turned into a fiasco. They did not want any innovations in theological training. After a lecture on pastoral psychology in Darmstadt , the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau came up with the offer to work as a supervisor at the University Hospital in Frankfurt , which he did until 1973. He received his doctorate in 1973 from the University of Erlangen (Dr. theol.). Then he was a lecturer at the pastoral college in Neuendettelsau, a church training center, until 1979. Since 1974 he had a teaching position at the Augustana University. At the same time he studied psychology in Erlangen 1973–1978 , did psychoanalysis and training analysis and passed with a diploma. In the end he taught until his retirement in Neuendettelsau, where he supervised 14 doctorates and 4 habilitations.

He and his wife Helga have a son, Matthias, who is a medical doctor in the United States.
