Richard von Riess

Richard Riess , from 1885 von Riess , (born March 19, 1823 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ; † October 6, 1898 in Rottenburg am Neckar ) was a German theologian .

Life

Rieß studied theology at the University of Tübingen , was ordained a priest on September 28, 1846 in Rottenburg am Neckar , and finally became a Dr. phil. PhD. After he was first repetent in Ehingen an der Donau in 1849 , he took a position as a teacher of mathematics and geography at the educational institute Dr. Lichtenstein in Neutrauchburg . From 1856 to 1858 Riess held various parish administration positions before he became pastor and school inspector in Unterboihingen . In 1864 he became an extraordinary member of the Catholic Church Council in school matters as a high school councilor and moved to the position of city pastor and school inspector in Ludwigsburg . On October 27, 1879, he was appointed cathedral capitular of the Rottenburg diocese and installed on November 30, 1879. During his time in Rottenburg, he was also chairman of the Sülchgauer Antiquities Association . From 1886 to 1895 Riess was a member of the cathedral chapter in the second chamber of the Württemberg state parliament .

Act

In addition to his pastoral and administrative duties as well as his teaching activities, Riess was also active in the scientific field. His main focus was on biblical geography. His most prominent work is a Bible atlas , which first appeared in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1864 under the title: The countries of holy scripture. Historical-geographical biblical atlas as an aid to understanding the holy scriptures and the biblical history. At the same time, taking into account the current geographical conditions of Palestine, the Sinai Peninsula and the ruins of Assyria and Babylon , in the later editions only: Bible atlas in ten maps together with geographical index was named. The work was published in English in 1879, in French in 1880 and finally in Latin in 1896 for international distribution under the title: Atlas Scripturae sacrae. Decem tabulae geographicae cum indice locorum Scripturae sacrae Vulg. edit., scriptorum ecclesiasticorum et ethnicorum . Various other writings followed, articles in scientific journals and contributions to encyclopedias, including Biblical Geography in Freiburg in 1872 .
