Richard Ely
Richard Theodore Ely (born April 13, 1854 in Ripley , New York - † October 4, 1943 in Old Lyme , Connecticut ) was an American economist and a leading figure in the Progressive Movement and the Social Gospel , who responded to the negative effects of unbridled capitalism and gained a high status as a social model in the USA.
Life
Richard Ely studied at Columbia University and then did his doctorate at Heidelberg University . Strongly influenced by Karl Knies and the historical school , he returned to the USA in 1881, initially to the Johns Hopkins University , where he worked until 1892. He then taught at the University of Wisconsin – Madison .
Based on the Verein für Socialpolitik , he founded the American Economic Association , of which he was president from 1899 to 1901.
In 1925 he founded the Journal of Land and Public Utility Economics .
