Ricky Ponting

Ricky Thomas Ponting (nickname: Punter) (born December 19, 1974 in Launceston , Tasmania , Australia ) is an Australian cricketer . Ponting was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2006. The International Cricket Council (ICC) also named him ICC Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007. In addition, Ponting was voted Test Player of the Year by the ICC in 2003, 2004 and 2006 . In 2002 he was awarded the title of One-Day International Player of the Year.

Ponting is best known to cricket fans for his skills as a batsman .

Ponting played his first test match for Australia at the age of 20 in December 1995 in Perth against Sri Lanka ; he managed 96 runs . He played his first one-day international cricket match on February 15, 1995 against South Africa in Wellington , New Zealand. Ponting has participated in four cricket world championships with the Australian team with whom he won the title in 1999 , 2003 and 2007 . When the Australian cricket team won over India in the 2003 World Cup final, Ponting hit an excellent 140 runs. Shortly thereafter he was named captain of the Australian national cricket team; he held this post until 2011.
