Richard Georg Willi Puhlmann was discovered for the film at the age of seven and was in demand as Willi Puhlmann as a child actor during the remaining war years . In autumn 1943 it was decided to cast him for the fairy tale film Der kleine Muck with the title role. The end of the war also largely marked Puhlmann's early career end, the teenager was only offered two smaller roles in two DEFA productions in 1949 and 1954.

As a photographer

As early as 1951, Puhlmann began studying fashion graphics, graphics and art history at Berlin's University of Fine Arts. Since 1955 he has been working as a freelance fashion illustrator as Rico Puhlmann for several German magazines and French Vogue. At the same time, Puhlmann photographed fashion for German (such as Constanze, Stern, Petra and Brigitte) and international magazines and portrayed stars from film, music and fashion, including Hildegard Knef , Cindy Crawford , Mel Gibson , Cheryl Tiegs , Naomi Campbell and Isabella Rossellini .

In 1970 Rico Puhlmann settled in New York, where he continued his career as a fashion photographer and from then on supplied resident glossy publications such as Harper's Bazaar, Glamor, GQ and the New York Times. In 1972 Puhlmann was recognized for his photographic achievements by the New York Society of Publication Designers.

Between 1973 and 1976 Puhlmann contributed as an author, director, cameraman and presenter to the SFB as part of the program "Modejournal - Sounds und Silhouetten". In 1976 the photographer presented his own blouse collection under the label "Rico Puhlmann Design". Rico Puhlmann continued his work as a fashion photographer throughout the 1980s and 1990s and optically designed campaigns for fashion and cosmetics companies such as Ungaro, Fendi, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Estée Lauder, L'Oréal, Clinique and Revlon. Puhlmann works are exhibited as part of the permanent exhibition “People, Fashion and Machines” in the Nordhorn City Museum.

Like all 230 passengers, Puhlmann died on July 17, 1996 as a result of the crash of Trans-World Airlines Flight 800 .
