The giant mountain is 922.7  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Ore Mountains between Sosa and Johanngeorgenstadt in the Ore Mountains District .

Location and surroundings

The giant mountain lies west of the forest road between Sosa and the district Steinbach von Johanngeorgenstadt and is about two kilometers to the west lying 1018.2  m above sea level. NHN high Auerberg surmounted. Not far from there are the Riesenberg houses with an excursion restaurant.

The Riesenberg is one of the most important heights in the Saxon Upper Ore Mountains in the area of the former Schwarzenberg rule . The Kleine Bockau and the Sosaer Bach flow at the foot of the Riesenberg .

On the top of the Giant Mountain there are two free-standing granite rocks formed from blocks lying on top of one another, which in the distance look like the ruins of an old castle. Granite masses similar to beds stacked on top of each other can also be found directly on the road between Breitenbrunn and Erlabrunn, known as yeast dumplings.

Origin of the name

How the incomparably lower Riesenberg got this name, which the neighboring Auersberg was supposed to bear, is difficult to decide; perhaps it used to be included in the Auersberge, and this had both names - and perhaps the exclusive designation of the smaller peak with the name of the giant mountain owes its origin to chance.

Mining

On the Riesenberg there has been a sizeable iron stone mine; At the beginning of the 19th century there was a trade union colliery, the deep Riesenberger Erbstolln, where, however, the Kux was only valued at five thalers in 1819, and three self-leaning mines, namely Friedefürst and Ostlamm Fundgrube (Kuxtaxe 20 thalers), Urbanus and Eisengans, and four journeymen together Tannenbaum treasure trove (Kuxtaxe 25 Taler). One can, however, consider the Graupenberg, which adjoins the east, as a step on the Giant Mountain, and thus also the Stolln Society (Kuxtaxe 10 Taler).

To the west of the giant mountain, the Auersberg houses , which emerged from hat and colliery houses , stood until the end of the 19th century .
