The Rifugio Alpe Sponda ( German  Spondahütte ) is a refuge in Val Chironico, a side valley of the Valle Leventina , in the area of ​​the village of Chironico in the canton of Ticino . It stands at an altitude of 2000  m above sea level. M. on the southwest side of Pizzo Forno and in the chain of the Lepontine Alps .

history

The first hut was inaugurated in 1948. It was destroyed by an avalanche in 1975, rebuilt with the voluntary help of members and opened in 1977. In 2012 it was expanded and provided with a panoramic dining room and modern sanitary facilities. It belongs to the SAT Chiasso section of the Società Alpinistica Ticinese (SAT) and the umbrella organization Federazione Alpinistica Ticinese (FAT).

The three-story stone building has two lounge and dining rooms. The two kitchens are equipped with wood and gas stoves and cookware. The 46 beds are divided into four dormitories. The outside terrace has tables and a fountain. The hut is open all year round and is manned on summer weekends.

The hut is the stage of the fifth stage of the Via Alta Idra high trail , which leads in 12 stages from the source of the Ticino river to its confluence with Lake Maggiore .

Chironico is one of the most famous bouldering hotspots in Europe.

  • From Chironico via Cala in 3 ¾ hours walking time (level of difficulty T2). Chironico can be reached by public transport.
