The Ritterbach ( Jiříkovský potok in Czech ) is a left-hand tributary of the upper Spree between Ebersbach-Niederdorf and Oberfriedersdorf in the Saxon district of Görlitz with a length of 8.4 kilometers.
description
The Ritterbach rises on the western slope of the Butterberg (Vyhlídka, 453 m ) or northwest of the Hutungsberg in Bohemian territory.
On its upper course in the Bohemian Netherlands , which was formerly known as floodplain , the stream initially flows to the west at the saddle between Hutungsberg and Goat Back across a marshy hillside meadow. In the former hamlet of Dreihäuser, the Bakov nad Jizerou – Ebersbach railway crosses the creek on the Bohemian bush. Then the stream flows north of the goat back near Johannesthal (Jánské Údolí) around the Töppelberg (Skalka, 427 m ); in the ground called “Johannistal” it is dammed in a cascade of three ponds. Downstream these are the upper pond (Mexico II) , the now heavily silted middle pond and the lower pond (Mexico I) , which is the largest with a water surface of 2.8 hectares. Then the Ritterbach takes in a northerly direction, on both sides of its flat valley the houses of Altgeorgswalde (Starý Jiříkov) extend . There used to be three mills in Altgeorgswalde; the upper mill in the city center, below it the middle mill and on the Saxon border the lower mill.
The lower course of the Ritterbach leads south and west around the Hainberg . The brook leaves the Czech territory at the northeastern foot of the Georgswalder Mountain ( Toulčí vrch , 448 m ). Overall, the Ritterbach flows through the Czech Republic over a length of approx. 7 km, 4.7 km of which through Altgeorgswalde.
Immediately after the lowest houses in Altgeorgswalde, the last 1.4 kilometers of the Ritterbach reach German territory and flow through the Hempeltal. Downstream from the border in the valley of the Ebersbach / Sa area. Hempel is part of the town of Ebersbach-Neugersdorf . Before 1945 there was another mill in Vorderen Hempel: the Hempelmühle. On the northern slope of the Hainberg, the Oberoderwitz – Wilthen railway crosses the Ritterbach on the 61 m long Hempelbachtal bridge. The city boundary between Neusalza-Spremberg and Ebersbach-Neugersdorf, which is also the boundary between Friedersdorf and Ebersbach, runs along the creek below the railway bridge to the mouth . Shortly before its mouth, the stream is bridged by federal highway 96 .
Tributaries
Four streams flow into the Ritterbach on the left in Altgeorgswalde. Two nameless tributaries come from the goat back. The Harthe or Mühlgraben flows into the Georgswalder Markt. The fourth, also nameless, tributary coming from the Georgswalder Berg flows into the lower part of the village.
Flood
In heavy rain, the Ritterbach burst its banks several times; This particularly affected the location of Altgeorgswalde, which was built close to the creek. It is said that on June 14, 1666, a downpour made the Ritterbach swell so much that it suffered great damage.
The stream last burst its banks on August 7, 2010. The Ritterbach was spared from the floods that swelled up to the flood of the century elsewhere. In Altgeorgswalde, several cellars and, in the lower part, gardens were flooded. The damage to the creek bed in Altgeorgswalde was partially repaired by 2011. After receiving funding, the city of Ebersbach-Neugersdorf began repairing flood damage in Hempel in spring 2016.
