The Ritz were a Tyrolean-Salzburg noble family with Jewish roots. The Salzburg lines of the Ritz called themselves after their seats zu Grueb, zu Bürgelstein or zu Gartenau and went out around 1708. The line after Paul Ritz was called after its ancestral seat Schloss Sprinzenstein Ritz zu Sprintzenstain and from 1555 only Sprinzenstein . Other seats were Reichenstein, Neuhaus, this line dies out in the male line in 1679 . The daughter line of the Lamberg- Sprinzenstein went out in 1823, that of the Hoyos-Sprinzenstein still exists.

history

The ancestors of the Ritz (Ricius, also: Rici, Ricci, Riccius) were a Jewish family of German origin in South Tyrol. Peter Anton Ricius entered the service of Cardinal Archbishop of Salzburg Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg in 1520 . In 1525 Ritz acquired the Pürgelstein residence (today Arenberg Castle ), and in the same year he and the archbishop fled from the rebellious farmers to the Hohensalzburg Fortress . Peter Anton's brother Paul Ritz studied philosophy and medicine in Pavia, was then a professor there and converted to Christianity around 1505. Paul was the doctor of the Brixen prince-bishop Christoph von Schroffenstein and the Salzburg archbishop Matthäus Lang. In 1514 he became the imperial court doctor of Maximilian I as well as educator and adviser to Archduke Ferdinand (who later became Emperor Ferdinand I ). In 1529 Paul Ricius received the estate and Sprinzenstein Castle as a Passau fief. 1530 brought Emperor Charles V. Paul Ritz and Peter Anton with the title of Sprinzenstein in the baron .

The descendants of Peter Anton form the Salzburg line of the Ritz and remained in the knighthood, his son Ludwig built the Grub (Grueb) residence near Lofer in 1537 (today Grubhof Castle ). In 1542 he was accepted into the Salzburg Landmannschaft . In 1555 he bought Bürglstein and called himself Ritz zum Sprinzenstein and Grueb . Emperor Leopold I confirmed his baron status to his great-grandson Emmeram Friedrich in 1665 (see below)
