The River Douglas is a watercourse in Lancashire , England . It rises on Winter Hill east of Horwich and flows first in a westerly direction through the village and then turns north. It flows south of Adlington , where it crosses the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and turns south. The River Douglas forms one of the tributaries of the Worthington Lakes reservoirs. After leaving the reservoirs, it reaches Wigan , flowing south , where it turns west and runs parallel to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. At Parbold he first leaves the canal and turns north to meet the canal again at Ruffold . Before it flows into the River Ribble , it is also known as the River Astland at Hesketh Bank .
