The Rivière Mitis (from the Indian Mi'kmaq expressions " mitiwee " "meeting place" or " miti soo ", "poplar river") is a river in the Bas-Saint-Laurent administrative region of the province of Quebec , Canada .
It flows from the Notre-Dame massif of the Appalachian Mountains to the northwest into the St. Lawrence - estuary , which is kilometers wide here already 45th The river has a length of 74 km and a catchment area of 1828 km². The annual average discharge is 34.7 m³ / s.
The Mitis rises from the Lac Mitis ( ⊙ ). This is 25 km long and 18.6 km² in size, contains 97 million m³ of water and is dammed with the Mitis dam ( Barrage Mitis ) 11 meters high. The river flows into the Baie Mitis of the estuary of the Saint Lawrence River below the village of Price near Grand-Métis . The " Parc de la Rivière Mitis " nature reserve is located at the mouth .
There are two run-of-river power plants on the lower course of the river . The Mitis-1 dam, built in 1922, has a height of 7 m, a storage space of 0.9 million m³ and a power plant output of 6.4 MW. The Mitis-2 dam, built in 1947, has a height of 21 m, a storage space of 1.1 million m³ and a power plant output of 4.2 MW.
From 1820 to 1978, wood was drifted from the hinterland to the sawmills at Grand Métis and Price on the Mitis .
