Robert Bürkler (born March 6, 1863 in Rorschach ; † May 28, 1930 in St. Gallen ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of St. Gallen .

Life

He was the son of the tailor Valentin Bürkler. Robert Bürkler attended grammar school in Engelberg, after which he studied Catholic theology in Innsbruck from 1883 to 1887 . He was ordained priest on March 17, 1888 in St. Gallen. From 1888 to 1891 he was chaplain and real teacher in Uznach, then pastor in Gossau (SG) until 1903 and in Lichtensteig from 1903 to 1907. From 1907 until his election as bishop, he was the resident canon and rain of the St. Gallen seminary.

Robert Bürkler was elected Bishop of St. Gallen on October 28, 1913, and Pope Pius X confirmed the election on December 16 of the same year. He received his episcopal consecration on February 1, 1914 in the collegiate church of St. Gallen, the bishop of Basel and Lugano , Jakob Stammler ; Co-consecrators were Georg Schmid of Grüneck , Bishop of Chur , and Sigismund Waitz , Auxiliary Bishop of Bolzano-Bressanone .

As a pastor and popular preacher popular, was Robert Bürkler author of against the Social Democracy directed Repentance mandate of the Swiss Bishops from 1926, which affirmed that of the 1920s.
