Ferdinand Rüegg

Ferdinand Rüegg (born April 20, 1847 in Goldingen , † October 14, 1913 in Tübach ) was a Roman Catholic bishop of St. Gallen .

Life

Ferdinand Rüegg was born as the son of the farmer Balz Christian Rüegg and grew up in a farm in Müesliegg in Goldingen that was built in the 16th century.

He attended the episcopal boys' seminary in St. Georgen and studied philosophy and theology with the Jesuits in Innsbruck .

On November 6, 1870, he was ordained a priest in St. Gallen and was teacher and prefect at the St. Georgen boys' college from 1870 to 1874 , until it was dissolved in 1874; Subsequently he was pastor of Mogelsberg from 1874 to 1877 and in Lichtensteig from 1877 to 1880 . In 1880 he was resident canon and rain in St. Gallen. In these offices he remained until his appointment in 1889 as dean and official . On 10 June 1906 he was Archbishop Sebastian Gebhard Messmer of Milwaukee ( USA ) as Bishop of St. Gallen ordained and remained until his death in this office.

After his election as Domdekan he acquired in 1890 at the request of Vatican titled Dr. theol.

As the preferred collaborator and successor to Bishop Augustin Egger (1833–1906), he consciously avoided the church-political disputes and put religious work in the foreground by campaigning for the communion decrees of Pope Pius X , among other things .

He was succeeded by Robert Bürkler (1863–1930).
