Life

He began to study law in Heidelberg in 1876 , but switched to chemistry the following year and went to Leipzig in 1877, where he studied physical chemistry and in 1881 received a doctorate. phil. The doctoral thesis on substituted sulfamides and amidosulfone chlorides . From 1881 to 1887 he was an assistant at the Physico-Chemical Institute at the University of Leipzig and then until 1895 as an assistant at the 1st Chemical University Laboratory. In 1885 he completed his habilitation in Leipzig with the work Experiments on the synthesis of bodies of the uric acid series . He became a student of Wilhelm Ostwald . 1885–1889 was a private lecturer in chemistry at the Philosophical Faculty of Leipzig University. In 1890 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy . From 1895–1897 he was a private lecturer in organic and physical chemistry at the Technical University of Hanover , and then full professor there until 1924.

With Oscar Rosen he published his habilitation thesis in the reports of the German chemical society . In it he proved that uric acid is a purine derivative, provided an indication of the correct purine formula and described a synthesis for uric acid. He also carried out the first potentiometric titration and provided evidence of the ring structure of glucose and its α and β form.

In 1893 he undertook his first work on potentiometric titration , which was continued by Wilhelm Böttger (1871–1949).

From 1890 to 1895 he was an extraordinary member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig. In 1886 he married Elisabeth, the daughter of the theologian Constantin von Tischendorf . Their daughter Elisabeth Behrend became a writer.
