Robert Byrne CO (born September 22, 1956 in Urmston , Lancashire ) is an English religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Hexham and Newcastle .

Life

Robert Byrne joined in 1980 the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in and received on January 5 in 1985 by the Archbishop of Birmingham, Maurice Couve de Murville , the sacrament of Holy Orders . In 1993 he went to Oxford to found a new branch of the oratorio, which he directed until 2011. During this time he was prison chaplain in Oxford and Bullingdon. Since 2011, Byrne has served as Secretary of the Commission for Dialogue for Unity in Faith and Church for the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales .

Pope Francis appointed him Titular Bishop of Cuncacestre and Auxiliary Bishop in Birmingham on March 15, 2014 . The Archbishop of Birmingham, Bernard Longley , ordained him episcopal on May 13 of that year . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Oakland , Michael Barber SJ , and Auxiliary Bishop Philip Pargeter of Birmingham.

On February 4, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle. The inauguration took place on March 25 of the same year.
