Michael Charles Barber SJ (born July 13, 1954 in Salt Lake City ) is Bishop of Oakland .

Life

Michael Charles Barber joined in 1973 the Congregation of the Jesuits at and studied in Spokane , Toronto and Rome . He was ordained a priest on June 8, 1985 in San Francisco . He then continued his studies in Rome and at Oxford University .

In 1991 he became a military chaplain of the United States Navy and rose to become captain (2012).

From 2002 to 2010 Barber taught at St. Patrick's Seminary of the Archdiocese of San Francisco in Menlo Park , where he was also a spiritual director . He then went on to be spiritual at St. John's Seminary Archdiocese of Boston .

In 2005 Barber was accepted as a knight in the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . In 2007 he became conventual chaplain of the Order of Malta .

Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Oakland on May 3, 2013. The Archbishop of San Francisco , Salvatore Joseph Cordileone , donated him episcopal ordination on May 25 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were Thomas Anthony Daly , Auxiliary Bishop in San Jose, California , and Carlos Arthur Sevilla SJ, Old Bishop of Yakima .

In February 2019, a bill was introduced in California that would criminalize the concealment of sexual abuse even under conditions of confessional secrecy . Barber announced in June 2019 that if the law was passed, he would break the law and face the threat of imprisonment .
