Robert C. Feenstra

Robert Christopher Feenstra (* 1956 ) is an American economist . Since 1986 he has taught at the University of California, Davis . He is also director of the International Trade and Investment Program of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).

education

Feenstra received his bachelor's degree with Honors in Economics in 1977 from the University of British Columbia . In 1981 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology awarded him a Ph.D. He then worked as a post-doctoral student at the University of Chicago for half a year .

Professional background

After completing his dissertation in 1981, Feenstra taught at Columbia University until 1986 and then moved to the University of California, Davis as an associate professor ( private lecturer ). In 1990 he received the C. Bryan Cameron Distinguished Chair in International Economics . From 2005 to 2006 he also headed the Institute of Governmental Affairs there . He is still the director of its Center for International Data .

In 1992 he also became director of the “International Trade and Investment Program” of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), at which he was previously a Faculty Research Fellow from 1985 and then a Research Associate from 1987 .

Feenstra was editor of the Journal of International Economics from 1995 to 2001 , of which he was previously co-editor. He was also Associate Editor of the Review of Economics and Statistics and the American Economic Review . He is still co-editor of the American Economic Journal - Economic Policy and the Journal of Economic Perspectives .

According to the economic publications database IDEAS , Feenstra is one of the 5% of the most research-intensive economists in the overall ranking (135th place). Feenstra also clearly belongs to the top 5% of the economists recorded in the database under criteria such as "number of quotations" or "number of works". Feenstra's most cited article is entitled " Integration of Trade and Disintegration of Production in the Global Economy " (1998). In this article, Feenstra compares various measures of outsourcing, demonstrates their increase since the 1970s, and examines the consequences of globalization for the employment and wages of low-skilled workers, for trade and trade regulations, and for labor standards.

In general, Feenstra is mainly active in the fields of international trade theory, development economics, business administration and the topic of emerging countries.

Memberships

In addition to his membership in the NBER Feenstra is also since 2006 Fellow of the Institute of World Economics in Kiel and in 1989 fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem .
