Robert Dallek

Robert Dallek (born May 16, 1934 in New York ) is an American historian . He taught at Boston University until his retirement in 2004. His main areas of work were foreign policy and the biographies of various presidents of the United States in the 20th century.

Life

Dallek studied history at the University of Illinois . In 1964 he graduated from Columbia University , New York City with a dissertation on the historian William E. Dodd (1869-1940). He then taught at the University of California in Los Angeles . In 1979 he received the Bankcroft Prize from Columbia University for his work on Franklin D. Roosevelt and American foreign policy. From 1994 to 1995 he was visiting professor at the University of Oxford . He was then a professor of history at Boston University . In 2004/2005 he was visiting professor at Dartmouth College in Hanover , New Hampshire . His book, An Unfinished Life. John F. Kennedy 1917–1963 is considered "one of the best and most reliable" Kennedy biographies today.

Dallek has been an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1994 .
