Robert E. Ricklefs

Robert Eric Ricklefs (born June 6, 1943 in San Francisco , California ) is an American ornithologist and ecologist . He is Professor of Biology at the University of Missouri , St. Louis . He is the husband of Susanne S. Renner .

Life

He completed his studies in 1963 at the Stanford University with a Bachelor from of Arts. In 1967 he received the Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania . He then worked for a year at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute as a postdoc before accepting a teaching position at the University of Pennsylvania (1968–1972 as Assistant Professor , 1972–1978 as Associate Professor and 1978–1995 as Full Professor). Since 1995 he has been a Curators' Professor at the University of Missouri .

His most influential (mostly cited) scientific papers deal with the subject areas of biocenoses , growth processes (especially in birds) and biodiversity (as of August 16, 2010). Textbooks he authored are Ecology , which was first published in 1973, and The Economy of Nature , which was first published in 1976.

Awards

• In 1974 he received the Guggenheim Scholarship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
• In 1976 he was accepted as a Fellow of the American Ornithologists' Union .
• In 1982 he received the American Ornithologists' Union's William Brewster Memorial Award , an annual award for outstanding work on birds in the Western Hemisphere. The justification of the AOU was as follows:

“ The key to science is to bring together information from different sources and synthesize it into a new perspective. Robert E. Ricklefs distinguishes himself in this greatly changed intellectual process, and also by the constant supply of new data, which are essential for new syntheses. The biological questions he has dealt with are complex, but mostly focused on factors such as the influence of evolution on the growth of birds and the development of variants of patterns within a species. At the same time, he created a novel synthesis of information on the life cycle of birds and their demographics, which explained to us the pattern of coevolution in growth and death rates and the lifestyle of birds. In addition, he prepared proactive analyzes of the temporary and spatial diversity in bird communities and the interrelationships through variables in their life history. Throughout his oeuvre, he has maintained a clear relationship between theory and empirical observations and expressed his ideas and results in easy-to-read prose. Robert E. • In 1984 he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
• In 1993 he was made a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
• In 2000 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Université catholique de Louvain .
• In 2003 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pacific Seabird Group for his work on growth processes and the development of sea ​​birds .
• In the same year he received the Margaret Morse Nice Medal from the Wilson Ornithological Society .
• In 2004 he received the Sewall Wright Award from the American Society of Naturalists, which is presented annually to researchers who make fundamental contributions to the conceptual unification of the fields of biology.
• In 2006 he received the Loye and Alden Miller Research Award from the Cooper Ornithological Society, which is awarded for life's work in the field of ornithology.
