Robert Gardener
Carl Julius Robert Gärtner (born January 9, 1894 in Freiburg , Province of Silesia , † November 8, 1951 in Göttingen ) was a German agricultural scientist and professor of animal breeding and dairy farming.
Live and act
Robert Gärtner was born in Freiburg (Lower Silesia) as the son of a later General Director and passed his Abitur examination here in 1912. From 1912 to 1914 he studied economics and agriculture at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau , Leipzig and Marburg . In 1914 he registered as a war volunteer, in 1915 he resigned from the army and began an agricultural apprenticeship. He then studied agriculture at the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University in Breslau and received his doctorate in 1918 at the agricultural department of the Philosophical Faculty. phil. This was followed by work at the Institute for Agricultural Animal Production Studies (Prof. Friedrich Holdefleiß , from 1920 Wilhelm Zorn ) with the habilitation in animal breeding (1922). As a private lecturer, he mainly represented the breeding of small animals and was appointed associate professor in 1928.
In 1931 he moved to the University of Jena , began at the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Faculty established in 1925 as a permanent professor for animal breeding and director of the institute of the same name and was appointed full professor for animal breeding in 1932. In April 1933 he joined the NSDAP (membership number 3,078,234). When Gustav Frölich was appointed to Dummerstorf (1939), Gärtner was supposed to move to Halle. At first he resisted, but by order of the Ministry of Science he had to take the chair on a substitute basis. In 1941 he accepted the call as professor for animal breeding and head of the institute for animal breeding and dairy at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg .
After the end of the Second World War, Gärtner was dismissed from the university management in Halle for political reasons and moved to the University of Göttingen . Here he was full professor for animal breeding and director of the institute for animal breeding and dairy farming until 1951. He died at the age of 57 and his wife outlived him by 26 years.
