Robert Gardner Wilson

Robert Gardner Wilson ( 1911 - May 1989 ) was an American gardener, plant breeder and amateur botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " RGWilson ".

Life

Wilson grew up in Waltham , Massachusetts . After graduating from high school in 1929, he studied at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture in Amherst . After various activities, including on rubber tree plantations in Haiti and orange gardens in Nassau County , Florida , he finally founded the Fantastic Gardens nursery in Miami in 1936 , which he then ran for almost 30 years. At first he grew cacti there, but after a few years specialized in bromeliads . He published his botanical descriptions together with the botanist Harold Emery Moore jr.

In 1963, Wilson left Miami and moved with his wife Catherine E. Wilson to the Las Cruces estate near San Vito , Costa Rica , which the two of them converted into a botanical garden ( Las Cruces Botanical Garden , now Jardín Botánico Robert y Catherine Wilson and Wilson Botanical Garden ). Wilson was buried with his wife, who died in 1984, in a small area in their botanical garden.
