Robert Gilpin

Robert George Gilpin Jr. (* July 2, 1930 - June 20, 2018 in Waterbury , Vermont ) was an American political scientist and is considered one of the main exponents of international political economy from a non- Marxist perspective.

Life

He worked at Princeton University from the early sixties . His areas of interest included international relations , especially in Europe and Asia . In 1987 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Gilpin takes a realistic , state-centered approach and describes the tension between world politics and global economy . He assumes the primacy of high politics over the interdependent world economy . Institutions are an instrument of the states, not autonomously effective organizations .
