Robert Helbling
Robert Helbling (born October 14, 1874 in Rapperswil , † December 29, 1954 in Walenstadt ) was a Swiss mountaineer , geologist , mining engineer , geodesist and pioneer of photogrammetry .
Life
The son of a pharmacist graduated from high school in Frauenfeld and Aarau . He studied geology at the Zurich Polytechnic and then mining science at the Technical Universities of Berlin and Aachen . In 1902 he was at Carl Schmidt at the University of Basel with a thesis on the ore deposits of Mont Chemin at Martigny in the Valais to Dr. phil. PhD. From 1906 to 1912 he carried out surveying work in the Andes , using stereophotogrammetry . In Switzerland he was one of the first to use stereo autography for recording new mountain maps and in photogeology . In 1909 he opened an office for stereo photogrammetry in Flums . In 1921 he co-founded the sales company Heinrich Wilds geodätische Instrumente AG (later Wild Heerbrugg AG ).
In 1949, ETH Zurich awarded him an honorary doctorate in natural sciences in recognition of his services to the development of photogeology and his pioneering work in the introduction of photogrammetry in Switzerland.
Helbling was the founder of the Academic Alpine Club Zurich in 1896. He was a colonel in the Swiss Army .
