Robert Nijdam (born September 20, 1971 in Meppel ) is a Dutch handball trainer and former handball player , who was mostly used on the right wing .

Player career

The 1.84 m tall and 85 kg heavy left-hander initially played for AHV Swift Arnheim in his home country. With E&O Emmen he was twice Dutch champion and one cup winner. After a stint at HV Tachos Waalwijk, he went to Belgium to Herstal Lüttich, with whom he won the Belgian Cup in 1996. In 1997 he came to the German handball league for OSC Rheinhausen . When the OSC withdrew from the Bundesliga for financial reasons at the end of 1997, he moved to TSG Bielefeld . For the 1998/99 season he joined the Bundesliga club TuS Nettelstedt . After one season he returned to HVN Tachos in the Netherlands, where he again only spent one season. Then he signed with SG Solingen . After three years he went to Switzerland to GC Amicitia Zurich , where he scored 113 goals in 32 games. In his last season he was again cup winner with Waalwijk and top scorer in the Eredivisie.

Nijdam played 152 international matches for the Dutch men's national handball team . At the 1990 student world championships in his own country, he finished eighth, at the military world championships in Poland in 1992 and in Egypt in 1993, eighth and seventh respectively. For a European championship or world championship he could not qualify.

Coaching career

Robert Nijdam took over the beach handball national team during his active career . From 2005 he trained the Bevo HC Panningen. After a season as Belgian national coach, he returned to Zurich in 2009. After working as a coach instructor in Africa, he got the offer to look after the national team of Burkina Faso at the 2012 African handball championship . From February 2012 he was the coach of the Belgian club Sporting Neerpelt-Lommel. He has been in charge of the Dutch junior selection team since October 2014. He has been coaching German Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen since the 2018/19 season . At the end of November 2019, he ended his job in Leverkusen. On December 15, 2019, he took over the second division Werder Bremen . He is under contract in Bremen until the end of the 2021/22 season.
