Already on July 13th, the young talent was used in the Intertoto game against Wiener SC in the team with the "diamond". On September 4, 1968, he made his Bundesliga debut in a 5-2 home win against Eintracht Braunschweig. Pötzschke played in attack alongside Uwe Seeler and Gert Dörfel and scored a goal. In November 1968 he had participated in the trade fair cup game against Slavia Prague. At the end of the round, HSV finished sixth and Pötzschke had scored two goals in ten games. In his second HSV season, 1969/70 , he came despite the newcomers Klaus Zaczyk , Peter Nogly , Norbert Hof and Siegfried Beyer to 23 league appearances, where he again scored two goals. It was an advantage for him that he could act on both the left and right wing. In May 1970 he was used in the two games in the Intertoto Cup against RSC Anderlecht and IFK Göteborg. Under coach Klaus-Dieter Ochs , he completed his last Bundesliga game on May 1, 1971 in a 2-1 home win against Eintracht Braunschweig. With Siegfried Beyer and Gerd Klier he formed the attack. He played three years with Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga , he played 46 games in which he scored four goals.

For the 1971/72 season he moved together with Hans-Werner Kremer to SV Röchling Völklingen in the Southwest Regional Football League , where he played until 1974. Pötzschke won the runner-up in the southwest twice in 1972 and 1973 with the black-reds alongside the top performers Klaus Hommrich and Jürgen Stars and thus also made it into the Bundesliga promotion rounds. It was not enough for promotion to the Bundesliga. Pötzschke played a total of eleven games with two goals for the eleven from the Köllerbach stadium in the promotion rounds. In three rounds of the regional league, he made 56 league appearances with three goals. In the summer of 1974 he ended his professional playing career and joined the amateur club SV Siersburg.
