from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert W. Cox (* 1926 in Montreal ; † October 2018 ) was a political scientist from Canada . He founded together with Stephen Gill the neo-gramscianism and thus made the theories of Antonio Gramsci on the political science sub-discipline of International Relations fruitful.

Life

As a student, Cox worked for the International Labor Organization (ILO), whose headquarters were relocated from Geneva to Montreal during the Second World War . In Montreal he passed his bachelor's degree in 1946 and his master's degree in history at McGill University in 1948 . Immediately thereafter, he returned to work for the ILO, which resided in Geneva, most recently as director of the International Institute for Labor Matters, which is part of the ILO . In Geneva, Cox also taught from 1964 as a professor at the Graduate School of International Studies . After differences of opinion about decision-making in international organizations, for which he had prepared a publication, he left the ILO and Geneva. From 1972 to 1977 he taught as a professor at Columbia University in New York City , and from 1977 until his retirement in 1992 at York University in Toronto .

In 2016, Cox was named a member of the Order of Canada .
