Robert Wyler

Robert Wyler (born September 25, 1900 in Mulhouse , Alsace , then German Empire , † January 17, 1971 in Los Angeles ) was a Swiss-American screenwriter , film producer and director .

life and career

Wyler began directing in 1931 with three French feature films . Because of his Jewish faith, however, he had to leave the country after Hitler came to power. So he emigrated to the USA . As early as 1936, he made his film debut as a screenwriter there for the classic Zeit der Liebe, Zeit des Abschieds . Directed by his brother William Wyler and starring Walter Huston and Ruth Chatterton , the film won an Oscar in the “Best Production Design” category and was nominated in six other categories.

Total produced eight films Wyler, with as many movies he was on the script involved. Many of the films he participated in were directed by his younger brother William. Contributors include Olivia de Havilland , Montgomery Clift , Kirk Douglas , Eleanor Parker , Gregory Peck , Audrey Hepburn , Humphrey Bogart , Jean Simmons and Shirley MacLaine .

For the film Polizeirevier 21 from 1951 he was nominated for an Oscar together with Philip Yordan in the category "Best Screenplay". His last film Infam from 1961 alone received five Academy Awards nominations .

Wyler was married to film actress Cathy O'Donnell from 1948 until her death in April 1970 . He himself died of a heart attack less than a year later .
