Robert Young (athlete)
Robert Young ( Robert Clark "Bob" Young ; born January 15, 1916 in Bakersfield ; † February 3, 2011 ibid) was an American sprinter who mainly competed in the 400-meter run .
In the US elimination match for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, he was only fifth, but was still used in the 4 x 400 meter relay , because the team manager put together the relay from runners who had not competed individually . Together with Harold Cagle , Edward O'Brien and Alfred Fitch , he won the silver medal in 3: 11.0 minutes behind the British relay.
In 1937 he was US runner-up over 440 yards . His personal bests over 400 meters and 440 yards were 47.1 s each. In 1938 he ended his sporting career after an injury.
Robert Young graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles and worked, among other things, as an accountant before becoming a vintner in Paso Robles in 1955 . He left his wife Alice, with whom he was married for 71 years, and two sons.
