Robert of Geneva († January 14, 1287 ) was Bishop of Geneva from 1276 to 1287 .

Life

Robert was the son of William II , Count of Geneva and his second wife Alix, a daughter of Albert II. De La Tour du Pin . Three of his brothers were also bishops: Amadeus Bishop of Die (1257–1275), Aimon Bishop of Viviers (1255–1263) and Guy Bishop of Langres (1266–1291).

Robert had been a canon in Vienne from 1252 , and from 1255 to 1276 he was provost in Lausanne . The cathedral chapter of Geneva elected him bishop before February 11, 1276.

Robert stood at the side of his relatives in the worsening conflict between the Counts of Geneva and the Counts of Savoy , who expanded their rule in the vicinity of Geneva. The citizens of Geneva strived for independence from episcopal rule and were supported in this by the Counts of Savoy. Count Amadeus V of Savoy briefly occupied the city of Geneva in 1285.

Robert died on January 14, 1287 and was buried in the Cistercian abbey of Sainte-Catherine-du-Mont-de-Semnoz .
