Robertsau in Strasbourg

Robertsau ( Eng. Ruprechtsau ) is the northernmost quarter of Strasbourg . Vegetables used to be grown in Robertsau. Today it is a residential area.

The districts of Robertsau and Wacken form a canton called Robertsau – Wacken .

geography

With 1,810 hectares, the quarter accounts for 23% of the total area of Strasbourg.

In the west Robertsau is bordered by the Ill , in the north by La Wantzenau and by the Robertsauer Wald forêt de la Robertsau , in the east by the Rhine and in the south by the Rhine-Marne Canal. Robertsau is located in the south of the Petit Ried .

Neighboring communities in the west are Hœnheim , Bischheim and Schiltigheim .

The neighboring districts of Strasbourg are:

  • Wacken
  • L'Orangerie
  • Quartier du Conseil des XV (XV stands for Quinze)

population

For a long time Robertsau was regarded as a health-endangering area that only fishermen could appreciate. According to the church records, around 1000 people lived here in 1700, and in 1900 it was already 8000.

In 1990 there were already 18,000 residents here. At the 1999 census, la Robertsau had 22567 inhabitants, who made up 8.5% of the population of Strasbourg. 90% of the social housing in Robertsau is in the Cité de l'Ill .

In French, the inhabitants are called Robertsauviennes and the inhabitants Robertsauviennes .

history

Around the year 1200 the knight Robert Bock had a castle built here. The quarter (Ruprechtsau) were named after him. The main street is still called rue Boecklin , while another street is called rue du Chevalier Robert .

A forward fortification was built by Vauban . The aim was to defend the city of Strasbourg shortly before the war that was fought as part of the Augsburg Alliance .

The Canal des Français , built for military purposes in 1707 , connected the citadel of Strasbourg with the river Ill at Fuchs am Buckel . In 1714 the canal lost its original military function. It was no longer maintained, which in the 1960s led to the ponds of the Pourtalès Park drying up. Since 2012, its is rewetting planned.

Robertsau, which is located between the Ill and the Rhine, was exposed to flooding and rising groundwater levels. Only vegetables were grown. Urbanization did not take place until the 19th century.

In September 1940 part of the population fled to Saint-Martial-d'Albarède . Apart from the social housing in the Cité de l'Ill , the population earns an above-average amount of money compared to the rest of Strasbourg.

The port aux pétroles (oil port) and the Albert Auberger basin were built in 1927. After being bombed during World War II, the oil port was expanded in 1960.

The fact that Robertsau is green, remote and wealthier than average, and the fact that the European institutions in Strasbourg are close by, means that settlement pressure is high. Not only floods and rising groundwater levels should be mentioned as risk factors, but also the industrial facilities in the port aux pétroles , which are classified as Seveso facilities.
