biography

Roberts' Retired Number with the Phillies

Robin Roberts was the Philadelphia Phillies' winning right-handed pitcher . Roberts came to professional baseball from Michigan State University , where he played baseball and basketball . In the first year of his professional career, he was disappointed to have to start in minor league baseball , but on June 18, 1948, he made his debut in the National League . That season he won nine games, in his first full season in 1949 he achieved fifteen wins. He celebrated his first season with twenty wins in 1950. The 20th win he reached in the last game of the season against the Brooklyn Dodgers on October 1, 1950. With this win the Phillies secure the title in the National League and reach the World Series against the New York Yankees . Here the Yankees had the upper hand in four games.

Until 1955 Roberts had the mark of 20 victories every year, from 1952 to 1955 even the most each in the National League. His best year is 1952 with 28 wins and seven losses. Throughout his career, Roberts had 286 wins, 245 losses, 2357 strikeouts, an ERA of 3.41, 305 full games and 45 shutouts. Since 1956, however, he had to struggle with health problems that made his throwing game no longer as successful as in previous years. In 1962 he was sold to the New York Yankees , for which he did not throw a single inning and which transferred him to the Baltimore Orioles . In Baltimore he reached another 42 victories in three and a half years. Further positions with the Houston Astros and the Chicago Cubs followed. On August 29, 1966, he played his last game against the Atlanta Braves and received the last victory of his career.

In 1976 Roberts was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame .
