Rochus Chapel

The Rochus Chapel is a Catholic chapel in the 14th  district of Penzing in Vienna at Penzinger Straße 70 and is dedicated to the two saints of the plague, Rochus and Sebastian .

history

The chapel was built by the builder Georg Gerstenbrand in 1660 at the instigation of Pastor Georg Einwang. During the Turkish siege in 1683, the Rochus Chapel was also destroyed, but later rebuilt. In the 18th century, the Viennese traders Johann Perinet and Johann Nikola had the dilapidated chapel renovated; another renovation took place from 1842 to 1845.

Description and setup

inside view

The floor plan of the chapel room is a Greek cross with shallow cross arms and a gallery yoke. However, the room is set in a closed rectangle, so that the outside does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the inside. This concept was also applied to the church on Leopoldsberg . The interior space is relatively high in relation to the length.

The high facade is in the classical style and ends in large volutes over the cornice. There is a clock in the center of the gable. A sheet metal hood adorns the roof turret. Above the entrance there is a mural depicting St. Rochus represents.

The high altar with a crucifixion group in the center dates from 1739 and is entirely painted except for the tabernacle and the cross with the figure of Christ. Above it, the eye of God is shown in a golden halo. The side altar painting is a work from 1844 by the painter Johann Höfel .

The parapet organ of the chapel

The parapet organ dates from 1794 and is the work of Joseph Effinger († 1809), a Pressburg organ builder from Mannheim .

Parish

The chapel belongs to the Roman Catholic parish Penzing St. Jakob of the Archdiocese of Vienna . Since 1995 it has been home to the Viennese parish of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church , which belongs to the common ordinariate for the Byzantine believers in Austria . Pastor is chaplain Vasile Lutai of the parish of St. Jacob.
