The Roman Catholic parish church Breitensee is in the 14th Viennese district Penzing in the district Breitensee on Laurentiusplatz. The parish is located in the city Deanery 14 of the Vienna Archdiocese belonging city Vicariate Vienna . It was dedicated to Emperor Franz Joseph I on the 50th anniversary of his reign and is consecrated to St. Lawrence . The building is a listed building .

history

The Breitensee parish church was built from 1896 to 1898 according to plans by the Breitensee builder Ludwig Zatzka in neo-Gothic style and was consecrated on October 8, 1898 in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The church is a brick building in the tradition of Friedrich von Schmidt , whose pupil was Zatzka.

architecture

The tower of the three-aisled hall church is placed directly above the main portal, in whose tympanum a St. Laurentius representing mosaic can be seen. The organ gallery is located above the entrance area , where Zatzka immortalized himself in the form of a portrait bust in the tradition of the late medieval builders. Below the gallery on the left is a life-size statue of St. Anthony of Padua , on the right one of St. Jude Squidward placed.

The richly carved high altar bears figures of St. Peter and St. Paul . The altarpiece created by Ludwig Zatzka's brother Hans Zatzka depicts Mary with the baby Jesus, surrounded by Saints Laurentius and Francis of Assisi and angels. A gold medallion with the head of Emperor Franz Joseph is inserted between the two angels kneeling at the lower edge of the picture . Also by Hans Zatzka are the paintings in the transept above the side altars, depicting the temptation of Jesus and the admission of St. Laurence in the sky.

The carved figures of saints in the apse are the work of JB Mauroner from Val Gardena .

The reliefs of the stations of the cross are zinc castings. The models from which they were made are one of the last works by the sculptor Rochus Haas . Originally polychromed, they were copper-plated in 1954.

The large glass windows of the three apses refer in a special way to the dedication as the imperial jubilee church. They form a closed cycle on the so-called piety on the cross in the context of the Habsburg Pietas Austriaca. The following scenes are shown: Way of the Cross , Descent from the Cross , Finding of the Cross , symbolized by St. Macarius and St. Helena , the vision of the cross of Emperor Constantine , King Stephan of Hungary , the swearing-in of the Electors on the cross by Rudolf von Habsburg , Emperor Ferdinand II. Prays in front of the cross, Emperor Karl V in Tunis, Marco d'Aviano and Emperor Leopold I. on the occasion of the second Turkish siege of Vienna , finally as a reference to the Last Judgment, the risen Christ with the empty cross, next to Mary, including two Judgment Angels. This Breitensee cycle, conceived by the priest Ferdinand Ordelt, who worked in Breitensee, is a remarkable example of Habsburg patriotism in the 19th century and thus also of the history of Austrian mentality. The windows of the southern apse are painted by Johann Wirnstl, the others by unknown Bohemian stained glass artists.

The other windows contain figures of saints named after their donors. The windows on the left side of the nave show St. Anthony of Padua, St. Agnes , St. Joseph and St. New Year's Eve , on those on the right are St. Walburga , St. Franz Xavier , St. Alexander and St. To see Heinrich.

organ

The organ , built by the Mauracher company in 1898, has 24 registers on two manuals and a pedal . It was donated by Ludwig Zatzka and his wife Maria on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph , which is reminiscent of a large inscription in the center of the organ case .
