Roelant Savery was a student of his brother Jakob and of Hans Bol from Amsterdam . In addition, he continued his education following the example of Jan Brueghel the Elder . Among other things, he traveled with Emperor Rudolf II and stayed in the Alps for two years. In 1619 he was accepted into the Guild of St. Luke in Utrecht , where he died in 1639.

He was in the service of Emperors Rudolf II (1552–1612) and Mathias (1557–1619) in Prague . He painted numerous landscapes richly portrayed with people and animals. Pictures of him are in the galleries in Prague (Paradies, 1618), Vienna, Berlin (Orpheus and the Animals), Wiesbaden , The Hague, Utrecht, Petersburg, Dresden and Munich.

Articles about the dodo often mention his painting from 1626, which shows this now extinct bird.
