Roger A. Pielke senior (born October 22, 1946 ) is an American climatologist .

background

He received a BA in Mathematics from Towson State College in 1968, an MS in 1969 and a Ph.D. in 1973. in meteorology from Pennsylvania State University .

From 1971 to 1974 he worked at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and from 1974 to 1981 as an associate professor at the University of Virginia . 1981-2006 he was a professor at Colorado State University Dean at Colorado State University from 1985 to 1988. 1999-2006 he was state climatologist in Colorado and held various research professorships at Duke University (2003-2006) as in 2004 at the University of Arizona . Since 2005 Pielke has worked at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) in Boulder as emeritus at Colorado State University.

He chaired the American Meteorological Society Committee on Weather Forecasting and Analysis at times, was a member of the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union , editor of the Monthly Weather Review for the US National Science Report for the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, and worked for the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences with the Scientific Online Letters on the Atmosphere .

Position on climate change

He considers the common approach in climate policy and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to infer individual regions from global modeling to be wrong and describes it as a top-down approach . He also explicitly criticized the summary for decision-makers of the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report as being one-sided in terms of both methodology and content (literally cherry picking ).

On the other hand, he proposes, based on regional risk assessments ( bottom up ), to consider various anthropogenic climate drivers, also beyond global carbon dioxide emissions, which are interrelated with agriculture and land use.

Together with Hans von Storch and Richard Tol , he called in the news magazine Der Spiegel for the resignation of IPCC boss Rajendra Pachauri and a reform of the body after allegations of inadequate handling of possible or actual conflicts of interest.
