Roger Michael Jacobi (born February 16, 1947 in Ealing , Middlesex , † December 9, 2009 in Watford , Hertfordshire ) was a British prehistoric archaeologist and expert on the settlement history of the British Isles . Since 1995 he has been the curator of the British Museum and the Natural History Museum in London .

Life

Roger Jacobi's father was German who left the German Empire shortly before the start of World War II , his mother was English. He attended Merchant Taylor's School in what was then the county of Middlesex , which had an archeology association and a school museum. At the age of 16, he joined the Prehistoric Society in 1963 . From 1966 he studied archeology and anthropology at the University of Cambridge , and he also obtained his doctorate at this university in 1975 with an extensive, three-volume study on Aspects of the Post-Glacial Archeology of England and Wales in the group of Paul Mellars .

research

After his studies, Jacobi taught as a lecturer archeology and prehistory , until 1988 at Lancaster University and then at the University of Nottingham , especially on topics from the Paleolithic . Since he felt that his teaching duties and the university bureaucracy meant he had less and less time available for field studies , he finally gave up another academic career and in 1995 switched to an initially temporary position as curator in the Department of Prehistory and Europe of the British Museum. Since 2001 he has been part of the Ancient Human Occupation of Britain (AHOB) project ; with Chris Stringer , Andy Currant and especially with Thomas Higham, he participated in numerous recalculations of the radiocarbon dating of Stone Age finds from Great Britain . As chief archaeologist of the project, he contributed significantly to the selection of the sites whose dating should be checked; this included, for example, the Red Lady of Paviland and the bone finds from Kents Cavern . Together with Chris Stringer and Andy Currant, Jacobi u. a. from 1987 to 1992 also Gough's Cave , the place where Cheddar Man was found .

Roger Jacobi died at the age of 62 from complications from cancer that was diagnosed only a few months earlier at Watford Hospital . His extensive collection of stone tools became the property of the British Museum and is accessible online. Its extensive archive, originally created on index cards, on the storage locations of more than 10,000 stone tools in public and private collections is hosted as a digitized version on a server at the University of York .

Honors

Roger Jacobi was a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London .

For his study, The Late Upper Palaeolithic Lithic Collection from Gough's Cave, Cheddar, Somerset and Human Use of the cave , published in 2004, the Prehistoric Society awarded him the Bagueley Award for the best article of the year in the archaeological journal Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society .

In February 2015 the book No Stone Unturned was published. Papers in Honor of Roger Jacobi , edited by Nick Ashton and Claire Harris. The proceeds from the sale of the book are to flow into an annual Roger Jacobi grant to promote research into prehistory by the Lithic Studies Society .
