Roger Walch

Roger Walch (born January 27, 1965 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss Japanologist , filmmaker and publicist .

He has published articles in NZZ , Tagblatt, Saiten, Asian Studies, Japan Magazin and Kansai Time Out, among others . His subject area is Japanese culture .

life and work

Walch studied Japanese Studies , Ethnology and Sociology at the University of Zurich . After teaching activities at the college of St. Gallen and at the East Asian Institute of the University of Zurich, he headed for two years, the St. Galler cinema "Kinok" and then worked as publishing director and editor in chief of the eastern Swiss cultural magazine "strings".

He attended film courses with the directors Hans-Ulrich Schlumpf (Zurich) and Kanai Katsu (Image Forum Institute, Tokyo ). Walch has lived in Kyoto ( Japan ) since 1998 . After 11 years of teaching at the Goethe Institute, Dōshisha University and the Kyōto Municipal Art University , Walch is mainly active as a filmmaker and publicist .

His documentary "Even a great river begins with a drop of water" won the "Friendship Prize" at the international documentary film festival at Expo 2005 in Japan. In their aesthetic quality and surreal conception, Walch's films are reminiscent of the works of Japanese directors such as Seijun Suzuki or Shūji Terayama . Walch has been playing the piano since he was nine years old and composes the music for his films himself. In 2004, he published a trilingual photo book about his adopted Japanese home, Kyoto.
