Roland Faulkner

Roland Faulkner (born April 20, 1932 - October 2, 2004 in Homewood , Cook County , Illinois ) was an American jazz guitarist .

Live and act

Faulkner performed as a teenager in Chicago jazz clubs at jam sessions ; he was also a member of a trio based on the model of the Nat King Cole trio around the pianist Norman Simmons . The first recordings were made when he was a member of the backing band of the singer Osborne Smith in 1960 ( The Eyes of Love ). In 1960/61 he played with Lionel Hampton , with whom he also toured Western Europe in 1961. In the following years he worked with Eddie Harris , Redd Holt , Clarence Shaw and Ramsey Lewis , from 1965 with Sonny Cox , Herb Lance and with Jack McDuff , to be heard on his albums Tobacco Road (1966) and The Natural Thing (1968).

Faulkner had his last record session in 1970 as a member of the big band The Soulful Strings . a. and Billy Wooten , Phil Upchurch and Richard Evans belonged to (play Gamble Huff , Cadet). In the course of his career he played a. a. also with Howlin 'Wolf ( The Howlin' Wolf Album , Chess 1968), Muddy Waters ( Electric Mud ), Sammy Davis Jr. , Sarah Vaughan , Billie Holiday , Joe Williams and Lena Horne . In the field of jazz he was involved in 25 recording sessions between 1960 and 1970. In his later years he was a member of a local band led by saxophonist Grady Johnson .
