Athletic career

Roland Freyer grew up in his birthplace in Brandenburg, Züllsdorf, where he also began to play organized football for the company sports association (BSG) Traktor. At the age of fourteen he moved to BSG Traktor in the neighboring district town of Herzberg . There he played until the end of the 1965/66 season, most recently with the men's team in the fifth class district class.

In the summer of 1966, Freyer joined the second-rate East German league team Stahl Riesa, where he was used in twelve league games until the end of the first half of the 1967/68 season, scoring twelve goals. In the second half of the season Freyer was part of the squad of the upper division Hallescher FC Chemie, who had to replace the retired offensive player Hans Sturm . Halle coach Horst Sockoll used Freyer on the third match day of the second half of the league in the away game against 1. FC Union Berlin . In the 1-0 victory of Halle Freyer played as a left winger, but it remained in this one use in the HFC league team. After the end of the 1967/68 season, Freyer returned to Stahl Riesa. The Riesaer had ended the season as a climber in the league, and Freyer initially played twelve of the thirteen first round matches of the 1968/69 season, where he also scored two goals. Due to an injury, he only came on three times as a substitute. In 1969/70 Freyer was a regular in the Riesa attack from the start, only missed one league game and was the team's second-best goalscorer with eight goals. After he had completed nine games in the 1970/71 league season by October, Freyer was drafted into the National People's Army in November 1970 .

During his time in the army, Freyer was able to continue playing football in the GDR league with the ASG Vorwärts Cottbus army sports association . Until his release in October 1973, he was always a regular in the army team in Cottbus . He was used in 57 league games and was a reliable goalscorer with his thirteen goals.

From the 11th day of the 1973/74 season Freyer played again for Stahl Riesa in the league. He immediately had a regular place again, but came in his 16 league appearances until the end of the season as a left winger only to two goals. For the 1974/75 season Wolfgang Schröder returned to Stahl Riesa after a long absence and ousted Freyer, who only made four substitute missions this season. Also in 1975/76 Freyer did not get rid of his role as a substitute player, although he was used in eighteen league games, he was only in the starting line-up seven times. In addition, he was used in four games of the 2nd team that played in the GDR league this season. Although only 27 years old, Roland Freyer did not return to the higher football leagues afterwards. He had been used in 88 league games within ten seasons and had scored thirteen goals. In the GDR league, he had 73 missions in which he scored 23 goals.

In the summer of 1976 Freyer began his career as a football coach at 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig . There he was first assistant coach of the league team in 1976/77, after which he worked as a coach in the youth field until 1990.
