Roland Gäbler (born October 9, 1964 in Bremen ) is a German sailor in the North German Regatta Club Hamburg and in the Kiel Yacht Club and a five-time Olympic participant.

Life

Gäbler grew up in Bremen, where he started sailing on the Weser . His parents encouraged his talent sailing through the purchase of an old laser - dinghy . At the age of 14 he contested his first regatta ; at the age of 15 he was able to win a sailing competition for the first time. In the further course of his career, Gäbler won two European championships and won 14 other international laser championship titles.

At the age of 23, Gäbler changed boat classes together with his laser training partner Hans-Jürgen Pfohe. From then on, Tornado was sailed in the catamaran class . The duo competed at the Kieler Woche and qualified straight away for the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 , but did not win a medal. Gäbler also broke his hand in the stormy regattas.

For professional reasons, Hans-Jürgen Pfohe had to give up sailing in 1989. The Gäbler / Pfohe team then ended their sporting collaboration. Frank Parlow became Gäbler's new partner . The team won four European tornado championships and the 1996 world championship for the first time. However, the collaboration with Parlow was not crowned with a medal success: neither at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona (11th place) nor at the 1996 Games in Atlanta (7th place) was it enough for a medal rank.

From 1997, René Schwall was the fore crew and team colleague of Gäbler. They won two other world championships and three European championships as well as a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . In 2001 Gäbler became DSV national trainer in the Tornado and 49er classes .

With Gunnar Struckmann from Kiel as the foreman and teammate, Gäbler won the German Championship, the Volvo Champions Race and the Kieler Woche 2005, which was Gäbler's fifth success at this event.

Roland Gäbler has been sailing with his wife Nahid Gäbler since 2009 . They immediately won the Travemuender Week and the German Championships in 2009. In 2010 they became the first mixed team to win the Tornado Sailing World Championships.

Together with the adventurer and balloonist Steve Fossett , Gäbler has also set a high-speed sailing world record on the “Playstation” sailing catamaran (34 m long).

In 1995 and 1997, Gäbler received the title “German Sailor of the Year” and twice the Silver Laurel Leaf award .
