Pfeifer started skiing at the age of five. After several years in the junior squad of the Vorarlberg Ski Association, he was accepted into the squad of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) in 1981. In January 1982 he made his debut in Wengen in the World Cup , but was initially only to a few World Cup appearances, winning no points. He was able to show major successes in the European Cup . In the 1983/84 season he reached third place in the slalom discipline ranking with two slalom victories in Tarvisio and Kopaonik, and in the 1984/85 season he was second and third in the slalom, giant slalom, super-G and disciplines with a total of five Combination third in the overall ranking. At the Austrian championships he was on the podium for the first time in 1985 as second in the combined ranking. Two third places in the slalom followed in 1986 and 1988 .

From the 1985/86 season , Pfeifer was also able to score in the World Cup. For the first time he reached the points on December 20, 1985 with 12th place in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora . For the second time, he scored 14th in the Parpan slalom a month later . After scoring only once 13th in the Kitzbühel slalom the following winter , he achieved his best World Cup result at the beginning of the 1987/88 season with fifth place in the Sestriere slalom . He was able to score again in December 1987 with 14th place in the slalom of Kranjska Gora. In the same month, a fourth place in the parallel slalom in Bormio was added, which was not part of the overall or discipline World Cup, but only part of the Nations Cup . After this winter, Pfeifer lost his place in the A-team of the ÖSV, whereupon he ended his career with the amateurs and moved to the professionals in North America. Pfeifer achieved numerous successes in the professional races. He won a total of 14 races by 1997, was world champion in Super-G and overall winner of the US Pro-Ski Tour in 1990 and world champion in slalom in 1992 and 1994.

After his professional career, Pfeifer began working as a trainer in 1997. He worked for the Vorarlberg Ski Association for a total of eleven years - most recently as head coach and regional coach at Sportservice Vorarlberg - before moving to the US Ski Association in 2011, where he has headed the women's World Cup technology group since the 2011/2012 season.
